Spot Welding is done when there are two metal surfaces with the maximum thickness of 0.5 to 3 mm to be joined under the pressure generated by electrodes. The process is applied on a spot for clamping two sheets of metal by melting to form the weld. In spot welding lots of heat is used on the spot and is done so fast that the rest of the metal does not get heated. Battery spot welders are often used in this process. The electrodes are chosen depending on the thickness of the material and its properties. This is required to ensure that the material does not melt with the application of little amount of energy. Wrong selection of energy may result into poor welding too. In spot welding the application of energy is measured and wrong application may result into molten material or hole in the metal.
While using the it one can opt for home made welder which works out economical too. To manufacture a battery spot welder one requires 25V capacitor, copper sheet, rectifier, welding electrodes and nickel sheets.
A few tests are required before actual welding is done with a battery spot welder. It has o be started with low voltage and a pull test is required after welding. This will ensure test of proper welding test. If the nickel is pulled from the battery and shreds of nickel is left on the battery itself it can be assumed that the welding is good. If there is burnt mark on the joint then it can be concluded that the capacitor was charged too high. An alkaline battery is always good for testing. It is also a good alternative; it is similar to the spot welder.A battery pack normally has a long service life. The biggest problem of soldering the battery is keeping the plastic separators intact. One has to ensure that solder does not spill over on the pressure relief vent. In some cases resistance welding is also used .They cause lesser damage to the cell. However the cost of resistance machine is quite high.
